“Creating success begins with picturing it” says Ari Weinzweig in an article in September’s issue of Specialty Foods Magazine. Weinzweig calls this process “visioning” and he defines it this way: “A vision is a picture of the success of a project at a particular time in the future…It’s a vivid description of what success looks and feels like for us…what we are able to acheive, and the effect it has on our staff”.
I started thinking about using this process to plan an event for your business. Let’s say that you want to have a Holiday Open House. Start by getting together with your staff and talking about what it will “look like”.
Imagine 100 people strolling through your store. Create your displays in your mind; think about your favorite color schemes. See customers tasting your products and picking up the gifts that you sell. Visualize your staff walking through the store and talking to customers about the products (ingredients, customers’ favorites, how items can be used together in a basket). Want to provide some entertainment for your customers? Envision some musicians playing holiday tunes in a corner of your store. Then, picture your customers ordering holiday baskets for their family, friends and business colleagues.
Now that you have a vision, what do you need to do to actually create this scenario? Ask questions and elicit suggestions from your staff. Your questions should be specifically related to your vision. For example:
- How can you notify as many people as possible so that you can get 100 people into your store? Should you use email, phone contacts or do a mailing? is there a way you can get your local paper to advertise your open house?
- Do you have the materials and fixtures to set up your displays as you envisioned? If not, where can you get them? Do you know someone who can help you build or borrow what you want?
- What does your staff need to know in order to discuss products and designs with your customers? What needs to be done to help them prepare for the big day?
- Do you know anyone who can provide music? If you can arrange this, what do the musicians need in order to set up?
- What products do you want your customers to taste? Do you need coffee pots, plates, napkins, etc. Have you contacted your suppliers to request tasting samples?
- What does your staff need to know to take orders? What would make this an efficient process: new order forms? more computers? Is there a location in the store where you’d like customers to go when they’re ready to order?
This is just a preliminary list of questions. The more questions you ask, the better prepared you’ll be. This process, where you visualize your dream, then work backwards to work out the details, can be applied for any special project you may undertake. I think you’ll like the outcomes!

I always like to see the newest issue of The Gourmet Retailer because it includes a promotional calendar that lists all the special occasions and events of the upcoming month. These “national holidays” can provide a plethora of ideas for gift basket promotions that your business can offer.
Here’s the list for November and some of my ideas for gift basket promotions:
- General Election Day is November 4th. All during the month of October, ask the customers who come into your store to vote on their favoritie cookie. Let your customers know ( by email or text message) that you’ll be sampling cookies all month. Then, on November 4th, promote a gourmet basket that uses the top three winners.
- November is Peanut Butter Lover’s month. Create a basket that includes all the peanut butter products in your line. And don’t forget the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzels!
- November 11th is Veterans Day. Offer a holiday discount to military families who want to send something to a loved one overseas. Check out Apex’s Treats for Troopers basket.
- Mickey Mouse’s 80th birthday is on November 18th. Design a new birthday basket for kids using Disney products.
- Thanksgiving fall on November 27th. In mid-October, start notifying your customers that you will have a variety of “Thankful” gourmet baskets that they can send to friends and family. Use email and promotional fliers to show customers your designs. Use a cornucopia basket and fill with fruit plus cookies, cakes and chocolates for a bountiful design. Don’t forget to add a beautiful bow that suggests the Fall season.
Please share your ideas for more Fall Promotions that will bring customers to your store.

“According to a study in May, 2008 by the Food Marketing Institute, approximately 71% of Americans are cooking more at home. Due to rising food and gas prices….interest in home cooking is currently growing”. Full Story.
Let’s face it: the economy isn’t doing well and consumers are looking for ways to curb their spending habits. So if staying home is one way that people are handling this, we, as business owners, need to pay attention to this trend and work with it!
Your customers are still looking for gifts to acknowledge special occasions for friends and family. How about trying a “Stay at Home” promotion and introduce some new gift baskets that focus on this theme? A Taste of Italy basket full of pasta, sauce, olive oil, cheeses, crackers, olives, cookies and chocolates will give the lucky recipient all that is needed for a full course meal. Pack this in a metal colander and you’ve included a gift that can be used again and again. Or try a Blockbuster Movie Night Basket that includes a Blockbuster gift card, popcorn, peanuts, and games for a perfect gift for the stay at home crowd.
Other “practical” gifts for the family might include a Boredom Basket, packed with games and snacks or a Kid’s Stop activity basket full of games, books and snacks just for kids.
If you’re hesitant about investing in the inventory needed to create these baskets, consider purchasing some “ready to ship” designs to try out your promotion. Since you won’t have labor costs, put a lower mark-up on these items than usual. This approach will allow you to try something new and offer your customers a great selection of gifts.
Just because business may be slower than usual, we need to keep trying new approaches to attract new customers and keep our loyal customers. You can be “practical” while still giving your customers very special gifts!

Do you have a university or college in your town? Young consumers are becoming an increasingly vital part of the marketplace and you might want to consider some gift baskets that cater specifically to this group.
Snacks, cookies, and candies are all time favorites for this age group. Why not create some moderately priced gifts and market these in local coffee shops, the university book store, video stores, and sporting goods stores? Advertise your business in the local college newspaper. Your small packages of nuts, candies, and cookies are the perfect size to toss in a backpack to take on a hiking or biking trip or to the library for some instant energy when studying.
Find out where the kids hang out and see if you can set up a small display. Include a coupon for a discount on their first purchase. Remind them that you can also send a gift to mom or dad for that “almost forgotten” special occasion.

Every month in Gourmet Retailer Magazine, a promotional calendar lists special events and holidays for upcoming months. Create and send your own calendar to your customers by email or direct mail so that they are aware of your creative promotions.
Here are some interesting and fun promotional ideas that you can use to spruce up summer sales.
June 9th is Donald Duck’s birthday. How about a newborn baby basket that includes duckie toys, bibs, cups, and other baby gifts? A cartoon video for older brothers and sisters would also be appreciated!
June 13th is the only Friday the 13th in 2008. Offer a 13% off sale on some of your newest basket designs.
Strawberry season starts on June 22nd. Design a basket that include all of your strawberry flavored items: tea, hard candies, cookies.
One hundred forty nine years ago, on June 27th, the “Happy Birthday to You” song was composed. Offer special pricing on all your birthday baskets during the last week of June.
One last note: June is Effective Communications Month. This might be a good time to have a staff training session that focuses on learning new customer service skills.

Are your email campaigns successful? Do you get orders? Are you attracting new customers? Are established customers responding to your emails? Periodically, we need to ask ourselves these questions and think about what we can do better.
Here are some simple, yet helpful tips from Target Marketing, May, 2008.
- Do you know what your email looks like when received by your customer? Before you send an email to your customers, send it to yourself. Is the format attractive? Is the font readable? Are the graphics or photos that you included clear and sharp? Are the colors used appealing? You might also send it to some friends to give you some feedback about these questions. They don’t need to understand your business or have in depth knowledge about your products to be able to tell you whether your email piece is appealing.
- Do your recipients immediately know who the email is from? Your name should be right at the top of the email with contact information easily found. Have you ever scrolled up and down an email to find a phone number or other way to contact the company? Frustrating to say the least! If you have a logo, you might want to incorporate this at the top of every email so that your customers recognize your brand.
- Is your offer clear? Have you offered solutions to problems relevant to your customers? Talk to your best customers and find out what “problems” they experience most often? Are prices too high? Are they looking for products that will save them time when designing? Are they looking for products that appeal to a certain audience? Your marketing campaign can then explain how your products or services will address these particular needs.

This year, Administrative Professionals Week will be celebrated April 20th-26th. It is always observed during the last full week in April. According to IAAP, the International Association of Administrative Professionals, “this annual event was originally organized in 1952 as National Secretaries Week. It was established as an effort to recognize secretaries for their contributions in the workplace and to attract people to secretarial/administrative careers”.
In Volume 5, Issue 1 of Rave Reviews Magazine, author Gayle Gallager gives some great advice about how to make the most of this holiday. “You have to please two bosses on this occasion. Your gift recipient is the boss you have to please with your gift. Your customer is the BIG BOSS who must be pleased with the convenience, service and value that you provide.”
With this mind, take the time to investigate what will work best by interviewing both the “bosses”. Talk to some business owners that you know and find out what they would be willing to spend for a gift. Then talk to some administrative professionals and find out what type of gifts they would prefer to receive. By doing some informal research, you can please both “bosses” and make this a profitable holiday for your gift basket business.

On the Gourmet Retailer web site, you can learn how to execute promotions that work! Several retailers shared their ideas about creative and fun promotions that have worked for them.
Chris Beykirch, a retailer who offered some ideas for the article suggests the following ideas that will help you be successful. Here are a few of his tips. Read the full article for more great ideas.
“Place someone outside your store to help people remember to come in that day. Ask vendors to provide merchandise to give away throughout the day. Free items always attract crowds.”
“HAVE FUN. No event should ever be so stressful that you hate it. Bring in balloons, set up posters and treat your staff to a catered lunch.”
“Get things ready at least two weeks before the event so that it is a low-stress day. Make sure the entire staff is on hand to help customers on the day of the promotion.”
I’ve also mentioned before that Gourmet Retailer Magazine includes a promotional calendar in every issue that highlights special holidays and events for each month of the year. Here are some ideas to help you plan great promotions for May, 2008.
May 5th is Cinco de Mayo. a Mexican holiday that celebrates freedom and liberty! Create a basket of Mexican gourmet favorites and promote this to your customers. If you have a Mexican grocery store or restaurant in your neighborhood, join forces to promote both your businesses.
May 7th is National Nurses Day. For any of your customers who work in the health care industry, offer a discount on a basket of their choice.
National Chocolate Chip Day is May 15th. Just imagine a whole basket full of delicious chocolate chip cookies. Include your favorites from a variety of manufacturers and ask your customers to vote for their favorites.
May is also Family Wellness Month, National Barbeque Month, and National Military Appreciation Day. Share your ideas with others for unique baskets and promotions that you can build around these holidays.
