[...] Third, think about inventory. Wilson suggests that you don’t need a lot of inventory for start-up, but on the other hand, you need to have enough product to be able to make creative baskets in a timely manner that will satisfy your customers. Consider starting with product assortments that will give you a variety of items to work with. If you need a list of items you should have on hand to start-up, see my earlier post on this topic and learn how to get start-up inventory lists and discounts for new gift basket businesses. [...]

I’d like to get a copy of the start up inventory. Also, I’d like to know why gift basket companies don’t sell smaller quanties to start up business instead of forcing business like my own start up to purchase much more than they need. Why can’t you break cases? I know it’s easy to slap a shipping label on a full case but it’s not very good customer service to start ups.

Thanks for your comment Daryl. I understand your frustration with this and you’re right about being cautious about stocking up with too much inventory when you are just starting out. For many wholesalers, it is just not cost effective to have employees spend the time necessary to break open and repack partial cases. We have found that there is a lot of breakage in shipping when we try to do repacks. An alternative for you is to purchase some product assortments so that you’re not overloaded with inventory. Go to Apex Gift Foods to see three assortments that might meet your needs.
