Specialty items, such as organics, are truly coming on strong as products to watch to fill gift baskets and containers.

Clients’ tastes and preferences change quickly, whether creating baskets for them or for those who will ultimately receive the gift.

All Things Organic was well attended, as were the other four shows at Chicago’s McCormick Place. Individuals are concerned about additives, so retailers are considering more organically-made products.

Gift basket designers may not be headed that way in droves, but it’s still a trend that we must watch.

Shirley, you make a good point. I think it’s important for us to keep abreast of current trends, but not necessarily “take the plunge”. It’s critical to assess what your customers want before adding lots of products to your inventory. We continually poll our customers to help us make decisions about new products we add to our lines.

The great thing about staying on top of trends is being able to discuss these issues with our clients. Even if we don’t choose to carry organic foods, for example, having knowledge about this category will help bolster our credibility and strengthen our position as experts in our field.

Flora, you’re absolutely right. Keeping on top of industry trends is an important part of being a true professional.
